Apple and Amazon have apparently partnered on artificial intelligence. At the AWS re:Invent conference, it was announced that Apple is now using Amazon’s custom artificial intelligence chips for services such as search and is evaluating these chips for use in services such as Apple Intelligence.
Benoit Dupin, Apple’s chief machine learning and artificial intelligence manager, appeared at Amazon’s AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday and described the AI collaboration between Apple and Amazon, according to CNBC. In a part of this speech, it was announced that Apple has started using Amazon’s artificial intelligence chips for its artificial intelligence searches.
Apple is one of Amazon’s AI chip customers
The presence of one of Apple’s senior executives at Amazon’s conference and the confirmation of the company’s use of artificial intelligence chips may be a confirmation of the power and effectiveness of Amazon’s new chips. Amazon has strong competitors like Google and Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence, and of course Apple also uses the artificial intelligence and cloud services of these companies.
Benoit Dupin said at the conference that Apple has been using Amazon’s AWS services for Siri, Apple Maps and Apple Music for more than a decade. In the latest round of collaborations between these two tech giants, Apple is using Amazon’s Inferentia and Graviton chips to provide search services, and Dupin says that Amazon’s chips have led to a 40% increase in efficiency.
This senior manager also suggested that Apple use Amazon’s Trainium2 chip to train the company’s proprietary artificial intelligence models, such as Apple Intelligence. Amazon announced Tuesday that it is ready to make its Trainium2 chips available to customers for rent.
Earlier this year, Apple announced in its research paper that it uses Google Cloud’s TPU chips to train the iPhone’s artificial intelligence service, or Apple Intelligence.
Amazon has recently made huge investments in artificial intelligence and related technologies. In addition to investing 4 billion dollars in Entropic, Amazon has unveiled a supercomputer with dedicated artificial intelligence chips in competition with Nvidia. The retail giant also unveiled new Nova artificial intelligence models for AWS customers at its recent conference.
