South Korea’s terms and conditions for improving relations with Russia
South Korea called on Russia to stop what it called “illegal military cooperation” with North Korea before any talks on improving bilateral relations with Seoul.
According to RCO News Agency, the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced in a statement today (Sunday): If Russia wants to restore relations between Moscow and Seoul, it must first end its illegal military cooperation with North Korea, which threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. .
The statement came after Russian Ambassador to South Korea, Georgi Zinoviev, expressed hope that the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Seok-yul would not negatively affect the potential for improved bilateral relations between Moscow and Seoul.
In a message on social networks on Saturday, Zinoviev expressed hope that the impeachment would not hinder the improvement of bilateral relations, but rather help it.
He continued to repeat Moscow’s warning that Seoul should never cross the “red line” of providing deadly weapons to Ukraine, adding that fortunately South Korea has refused to do so.
According to Anatolia News agency, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that the Russian representative’s public statements about bilateral relations were “inappropriate” considering the political situation of the host country.
The ministry added in its statement: We intend to continue our foreign policy without wavering.
Following the increase in defense cooperation between Russia and North Korea in recent months, the tense relations between Seoul and Moscow have become more tense.
