OpenAI has announced its plans to become a profit company. In a blog post released on Friday, Openai’s board of directors said it replaces the current structure of the company with a new structure that would control the control over its profit arm.
Converting to a publicly profitable public corporation
With the arrival of 2025, Openai intends to become a public joint stock company (PBC), a profit company that aims to operate for the benefit of the community. This section “will handle and control Openai Operations and Trade”, while the non -profit sector of Openai will have a share in the business, but will lose its oversight role.
The non -profit sector will work separately with its own leadership team and staff, “to pursue benevolent initiatives in areas such as health care, education and science.” The board said that the structure allows Openai to “attract the capital needed to build public artificial intelligence” and at the same time “one of the most profitable resources in history”. Openai competitors, including the anthropic and the XAI of Ilan Musk, also operate as PBC.
Rumors around the restructuring
There have been rumors about converting Openai into a profit company for months, as it is looking for ways to attract investors and raise money to keep its artificial intelligence models active. In September, Bloomberg reported that CEO Sam Altman will receive about 7 % of the stock as part of Openai’s programs to become a profit company, something that Altman has apparently denied.
“The hundreds of billions of dollars that big companies are now investing in artificial intelligence development show what Openai really needs to continue to pursue this mission,” the board wrote. “We have to raise more capital than we imagined. “Investors want to support us, but on this scale of capital, they need less custom shares and structure.”
New structure
Based on the structure provided by the Openai Board of Directors, this non -profit sector will receive a “fair valuation set by independent financial consultants” in PBC. Concerns about maintaining the control of the Openai non -profit board last year, when members fired Altman but later re -employed him, reached its peak.
Even with these programs to become a profit company, Openai may face challenges. Last month, Ilan Musk submitted a request to prevent Openai from becoming a profit company, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also called on California’s Prosecutor Robbenta to stop the transfer.
