Apple and Nokia signed a long-term patent agreement. According to the agreement, Apple will have access to several Nokia patents, which include inventions in the field of 5G and other sectors. Nokia announced this news today.
The new agreement between Nokia and Apple will replace the 2017 patent agreement. The two tech giants previously had a contract that was set to expire at the end of 2023. Now, before the end of this contract, a new contract has been signed and it will replace the current contract. Neither Nokia nor Apple have released the terms of the agreement, but apparently Nokia will receive a payment from Apple for its patents.
Although Nokia is not a major brand in the smartphone industry, it has introduced some of the most important technologies in the industry. HMD Global already has several Nokia-branded smartphones in the market, but unlike other brands, it hasn’t made much noise. However, Nokia’s main strength lies in its unique technologies and long patent history. The company has more than 20,000 patents, 5,500 of which are in the field of 5G technology.
Apple and Nokia were able to sign a patent agreement in 2017 after several months of legal disputes. The agreement was supposed to expire in 2023, but both sides have decided to extend their contract early. The financial details of the deal have not yet been disclosed, but are expected to be revealed in Nokia’s Q1 2024 financial report.
Currently, most of Apple’s products rely on 5G technology, so it makes sense for the company to extend its contract with Nokia.
