Italian media reported that US President Donald Trump wants to withdraw 20,000 US troops from Europe.
The state news agency ANSA, citing a European diplomatic source, reported that Trump plans to reduce the presence of American forces in Europe by about 20 percent, or 20,000 troops, as part of a review of Washington’s commitment to protecting Europe.
Informed sources announced that the US government plans to get financial aid from European countries for the soldiers remaining in Europe, because these soldiers are a deterrent and the costs cannot be borne by American taxpayers alone.
In July 2020, during his first term as president, Trump said he would withdraw 12,000 US troops from Germany in response to Berlin’s failure to meet NATO defense spending targets.
In February 2021, then US President Joe Biden officially suspended the planned withdrawal of US troops from Germany. By the end of 2024, approximately 100,000 US troops are stationed across Europe.
