The opposition of the Russian representative to the permanent membership of Germany and Japan in the UN Security Council
The permanent representative of Russia in the United Nations opposed the membership of Germany and Japan as permanent members of the Security Council of this organization.
According to RCO News Agency, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasiliy Nebenzia, said in an interview with Novosti News agency: “If the UN Security Council is reformed, some countries will never become permanent members, even if they are willing to do so.”
He added: “Discussions and consultations about the reform of the UN Security Council have been held in the UN for many years, and now I am talking about Germany and Japan in particular.”
India and African countries primarily hope to have a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. However, the German government has been working for this for a long time.
For a while, Russia itself was known as a supporter of such a reform, but the tensions between Moscow and the West in recent years, as well as the issue of the war in Ukraine, rose significantly.
It should be noted that in any decision, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council including China, France, Great Britain, Russia and the United States are able to veto the proposed proposal.
During the meeting of the UN Security Council held on Friday, Nebenzia also said about the recent developments in Syria: “Of course, the current authorities in Syria, who came to work after the fall of the Assad government, seek to cancel the sanctions imposed on them and They introduce officials who care about the interests of all Syrians. “Also, Russia and Syria have friendly relations that connect them and have nothing to do with any government or regime.”
In 2015, Russia participated in the Syrian civil war at the request of Bashar al-Assad. After the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Assad went to Moscow. Many Russian forces have since left Syria, but some are still stationed at Tartus naval base and Hmeimim air base.
