According to RCO News Agency, citing Anatolia News Agency, with the official start of visa-free travel for citizens of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area, the number of member countries of this agreement increased to 29 countries.

The official and full membership of Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen area started today, January 1, 2025.

The European Council agreed on the full integration of these two countries in the Schengen area on December 12 last year.

The full integration of Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen area was previously interrupted by the opposition of the Netherlands, Hungary and Austria.

Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007; But the regulations related to the Schengen zone were not implemented.
