EU warning to Russia’s “shadow fleet”.
During the recent damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, the European Union’s foreign policy chief warned against what he called “Russia’s shadow fleet” and promised to take tougher measures in this regard.
According to RCO News Agency, the connection of the “Stlink 2” cable between Estonia and Finland was interrupted on Wednesday, and after that, the Finnish authorities announced the possibility of sabotage in this case and seized the Russian oil tanker “Eagle S”.
In an interview with the German newspaper “Die Welt” on Monday, Kaya Callas, the head of the European Union’s foreign policy, said: “The European Union will take tougher measures against the threats posed by these ships.”
Claiming that these ships are doing “subversive” actions, he said: “Russia’s shadow fleet threatens the environment and funds Russia’s war.”
He, who was also the former Prime Minister of Estonia, claimed: “Sabotage in Europe has increased since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine in February 2022. Also, recent sabotage attempts in the Baltic Sea are not isolated incidents. “They form a deliberate pattern aimed at damaging our digital and energy infrastructure.”
German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock also reacted to this issue and said: “We demand more sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet.” These ships damage major undersea cables in the Baltic Sea almost every month. “The aging Russian shadow fleet poses a serious threat to both the environment and European security.”
The recent damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, after which the underwater power lines between Finland and Estonia were cut, also brought the reaction of Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO. “I express all my support and solidarity and announce that NATO will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea,” he said on Saturday.
