Russia called the cargo ship explosion “terrorist”.
The Russian state-owned company that owns the ship that sank in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea announced on Wednesday that the incident was a “terrorist operation”.
According to RCO News Agency, the “oboronlogistika” company announced in a statement quoted by Russian News agencies: “We believe that a targeted terrorist attack was carried out on December 23, 2024 against the Ursa Major ship.”
The company did not provide details on who might be behind the attack or why it did it.
The ship sank in international waters near Spain in the early hours of Tuesday after sending a distress call for help on Monday.
The company added that there were “three consecutive explosions” on the ship before it began to sink.
The company that owns the ship, which belongs to the Russian Defense Ministry, did not provide further details about the evidence suggesting a terrorist attack.
The Russian Foreign Ministry’s crisis unit announced on Tuesday that the ship had sunk after an “engine room explosion”.
The ministry added that among the 16 Russian crew members of the ship, 14 people were rescued and transferred to a port in Spain, and 2 people are still missing.
