Blinken’s support for a “durable and dignified” peace between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan
The US State Department announced in a statement that in a telephone conversation with Nikol Pashinyan, the country’s foreign minister reiterated the “importance of stable and dignified peace” between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
According to Isna, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a phone call on Friday. Armenian Press Agency wrote that during this telephone conversation, the parties discussed issues related to the peace process between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan and the agenda of Yerevan-Washington bilateral relations.
Following this telephone conversation, the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in this regard. The US State Department wrote in this statement: “Blinken reiterated the importance of a lasting and dignified peace between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
The statement continued: “Secretary of State Blinken welcomed the recent progress made between the parties, including their agreement on border border adjustments. Blinken and Pashinian discussed the expanding US-Armenia relationship, including cooperation in energy, trade, investment, and education. The Secretary of State emphasized the commitment of the United States to ongoing efforts to support a successful, democratic and independent Armenia that will benefit the Armenian people and the entire Caucasus region.
The Prime Minister of Armenia also held a meeting on Friday with Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alesky Overchuk.
The Prime Minister’s Office of Armenia announced in a statement: “In this meeting, issues related to bilateral relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation were discussed. They also discussed issues related to partnership within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union.
In July, Blinken hosted talks between Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his counterpart from the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeihun Bayramov, in Washington on the sidelines of the NATO summit on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of this organization.
After these negotiations, the foreign ministers of the two countries committed to continue the talks for the final peace agreement by issuing a statement.
Blinken and the US State Department have pressed Yerevan and Baku to quickly sign a peace accord, saying in June that the US expected Armenia and Azerbaijan to make “hard compromises” to finally sign a peace agreement between the two countries.
