According to a new report, Samsung is developing a health wearable called the Galaxy Ring, and a Japanese company will make its circuit boards.
Samsung’s 2022 patents also referred to a smart ring with electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors that could be used to control a smart home or Samsung’s upcoming XR headset.
Samsung’s Unpacked event is going to be held soon and we will probably see the unveiling of the Galaxy Watch 6 at this event. But if today’s report is true, Samsung apparently wants to switch from smartwatches to smart rings.
Korean website The Elec has reported that Samsung has begun development of a prototype of the Galaxy Ring smart ring ahead of mass production. Samsung will apparently work with Japanese circuit board maker Meiko, which previously made parts for the Galaxy S23 series.
Last year there were also many reports of Samsung’s smart ring patents showing how the smart ring uses PPG and ECG sensors to monitor heart rate and blood pressure.
The Elec said in its report that the Galaxy Ring will have better measurement accuracy compared to the Galaxy Watch. Theoretically, smart rings have a better performance compared to smart watches for monitoring sleep and other health parameters, and all this will depend on how well the Samsung Galaxy Ring will fit the user’s finger.
