Volkswagen is reportedly in talks with Tesla to use the company’s NACS charging technology. This will unify charging standards for electric vehicles in North America.
It should be noted that Volkswagen’s charging network unit Electrify America has already agreed to use the NACS port. This unit plans to expand its network to 1700 stations by 2025.
About NACS charging technology, we must say that this technology is a dedicated charging connector developed by Tesla and is now used in the company’s Supercharger network, which is the largest fast charging network in the North American region. The network is now available in more than 12,000 locations in North America.
NACS is a single port charging system that supports both AC and DC charging. This technology is twice as small and twice as powerful compared to the Combined Charging System (CCS). Volkswagen’s adoption of the technology follows Volvo’s recent announcement that it will use NACS in its electric vehicles in North America.
If Tesla’s deal with Volkswagen is signed, it will be a huge success for Tesla. The company has been criticized for its closed charging system, and other automakers have been unable to integrate their cars with Tesla’s Supercharger network.
It is not yet clear when the agreement between Volkswagen and Tesla will be reached, but the talks between the two companies are a good sign for the unification of charging standards.
