The popular VLC player is developing a new feature based on artificial intelligence that allows automatic translation of subtitles.

VideoLAN unveiled new AI capabilities in VLC at CES 2025. This feature allows users to create and translate subtitles instantly without the need to connect to the Internet or use cloud services.

According to a statement from VideoLAN, the new subtitle functionality is done using open-source language models. These models process the audio and produce subtitles directly on the user’s device. Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of VideoLAN, announced:

This is a huge improvement for VLC and the open source media ecosystem. By offering users the ability to create subtitles locally, we remove dependency on third-party services, preserve privacy, and We are increasing language support.

With more than 6 billion downloads worldwide, VideoLAN emphasized that VLC continues to grow as the number of active users increases.
