A Utah consumer protection agency has filed a lawsuit against TikTok, alleging that the company is illegally encouraging children to use its app addictively. The complaint states that TikTok clearly misrepresented the security of its app and falsely represented itself as independent from the Chinese company ByteDance.
This action of the state of Utah is the latest in a series of actions that many American states have taken to boycott Tik Tok. The authorities of this state are worried that the company may have relations with China.
In Utah’s lawsuit, Tik Tok’s negative impact on children is emphasized and it is claimed that the app secretly designed and used addictive features to attract teenage users.
Utah has already passed laws to restrict children’s use of TikTok, which will take effect in 2024. According to the new rules, children’s use of Tik Tok must be with the consent of their parents.
Parents will also be allowed access to their children’s accounts and messages, although this may compromise the privacy of teens.
