The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a self-driving Cruze car ran over a pedestrian Monday night just after it crashed into another car.
Witnesses said that the first crash caused the woman to be thrown into the path of the cruiser and get stuck under one of its wheels. Apparently, the driver of the first car ran away.
The condition of the woman, who is now admitted to the hospital, is described as critical. According to a video published by the Chronicle, two cars were waiting at a red light before the accident. When the light turned green, both cars entered the intersection, at which point the pedestrian collided with the other car and was thrown into the path of the cruise vehicle.
Cruise confirmed the accident and said that “one of our vehicles hit a pedestrian and when the pedestrian was thrown in front of our vehicle, the vehicle automatically braked to minimize the impact.”
“We are deeply concerned for the safety of the person involved in the accident and are working with the police to help identify the driver at fault,” Cruz said.
It should be noted that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has recently allowed Cruise and Waymo to offer their self-driving car paid services in San Francisco. But recently, Cruise had to cut its fleet in half in San Francisco after one of its cars collided with a fire truck.
In any case, we will have to wait and see what the results of the police investigation reveal.
