Mehrgan Festival was registered in the list of intangible heritage of UNESCO.
The 19th UNESCO Intangible Heritage Protection Summit, which is being held in the city of Ascension, Paraguay, agreed to register Mehrgan Festival in the UNESCO World Intangible Heritage List.
Mehrgan festival is one of the ancient Iranian festivals that is held on the occasion of the beginning of the autumn season and the harvest of agricultural products. And in that, people are grateful for the blessings of nature and earth by holding various ceremonies, including setting up colorful tables of special foods and holding joy and music ceremonies.
Zoroastrians celebrate it by reciting parts of their holy book Avesta, and Muslims recite special prayers and prepare tables of fruits and agricultural products. This celebration is one of the joint celebrations between Muslims and Zoroastrians, both communities prepare and serve different foods such as sweet nuts and special drinks. They play music, sing and stomp. Both men and women have a role in holding this ceremony.
The festival of Mehrgan is prepared with the cooperation of Iran and Tajikistan. The Mehrgan ceremony includes celebrations in these two countries that are held annually from October 2 to November 2. These celebrations, which are in accordance with the product calendar of both countries, are more celebrated throughout the country of Tajikistan than in Iran.
It should be noted that the case of “the skill of making and playing the Rabab instrument” from Iran will also be examined in the meeting.
