Ukraine’s claim about Russia’s intention to attack nuclear facilities
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine claimed that Russia has planned attacks on its country’s nuclear facilities before winter.
According to RCO News Agency, “Andrey Sibiha”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, published a tweet this Saturday (September 31) claiming that Russia is planning to attack Ukraine’s nuclear facilities before the arrival of the winter climate. He requests the International Atomic Energy Agency and Kyiv’s allies to deploy permanent monitoring teams in Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.
Sibiha wrote in the text of his message that he published on the X social network: “According to the estimate of the Ukrainian Intelligence Organization, the Kremlin is preparing for attacks on the sensitive targets of the nuclear energy of Ukraine on the eve of winter.” “In particular, these attacks involve open distribution systems at nuclear power plants and transmission substations that are critical to the safe operation of nuclear power.”
He did not elaborate further on this claim.
At the same time, Andriy Yermak, the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, also claimed the threat of a Russian attack on a Ukrainian nuclear facility and called for a quick global response to this threat.
It was at the end of August that the Russian media and authorities announced the plan of the Ukrainians to attack the Kursk and Zaporizhia nuclear power plants and subsequently accuse Russia of carrying out these provocations.
Shortly after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian forces took over the security of the Zaporizhia nuclear facility, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Moscow has since tried to prevent damage to the plant that could lead to a nuclear disaster, but Ukrainian forces have continued to launch highly provocative attacks against the facility.
On August 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia asked international organizations, especially the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to condemn Ukraine’s preparations for nuclear activities against Russian nuclear power plants. “Maria Zakharova”, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country, said in a statement about this: “Received information shows that the Kiev regime is preparing for an attack against the nuclear power plant in the Kursk region.” We call on the international organizations, especially the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to immediately condemn these provocative actions being carried out by Kyiv and prevent the disruption of the safety of the Kursk nuclear power plant, which may lead to a humanitarian disaster on a scale be widespread in Europe.”
