Prime Minister of Greenland: We don’t want to be Americans
Greenland’s prime minister said the territory under his control is not interested in joining the United States, but welcomes closer ties with Washington in the areas of security, defense and trade.
According to RCO News Agency, during a press conference, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mote Egde, referring to the recent events and the rhetoric of the US President-elect Donald Trump regarding the acquisition of the Greenland island, said: “I am surprised by Trump’s statements. “We don’t want to be Americans, and we’re not interested in joining the United States of America.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Prime Minister of Greenland emphasized: “However, we want to have deeper cooperation with the United States in the field of defense, security and trade.”
Mote Egde said that he was relieved that JD Vance, Trump’s deputy, downplayed the possibility and issue of the attack.
Greenland’s prime minister also noted: “We need to be strong in managing diplomatic relations while pursuing our long-term goal of becoming fully independent from Denmark.”
Donald Trump’s desire to take over Greenland has become more serious, and a few days ago he clearly said that the United States should acquire this autonomous island to “ensure its national security and freedom around the world”.
A group of Republicans in the US House of Representatives have just prepared a draft bill that would allow the US president-elect to negotiate the purchase of Greenland.
In a part of the draft of this bill, titled “Restore Greenland to Greatness”, and is reminiscent of Trump’s election slogan of “Returning Greatness to America”, it is mentioned: “The President is allowed to enter Greenland to take over. “Negotiate with the Kingdom of Denmark.”
