Medvedev: Trump is off to a very entertaining start
The vice-chairman of the Russian Security Council said today (Thursday) that US President-elect Donald Trump’s ability to achieve quick results in resolving the Ukraine conflict is very doubtful.
“We have no way of knowing how much Trump will achieve in his second term, but he is off to a very entertaining start,” Russian President and former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote in a message, according to ISNA.
“His reasoning seems clear enough,” Medvedev, who is currently the vice-chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote in a telegram. There is no quick solution to the conflict in Ukraine; The US economy will proceed at a slow pace; Even the fight against immigrants seems unlikely to end in a significant victory.”
He added: So he decided to rebuild the world. That’s exactly what it is – the creation of Trump’s new political geography. A bright and colorful new world, very different from the current dull and gray world. All ideas are purely fictional and completely unrealistic:
1. The greatness of America: Canada’s countryside (if it becomes a good big state, the whole continent belongs to the Yankees) and at the same time we take Greenland from Denmark (not sure what it is? But there is a lot of land there).
2. Changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico (doesn’t matter why. America is older and the Gulf, confusing to some, reminds us of Latinos).
3. Fighting “Aggressor Starmer” and “Stupid Schultz” at the hands of Elon Musk in X. The goal is simple and costs nothing – to let them know who’s boss.
Medvedev wrote: So even before he became the new president of the United States, Trump has won several important virtual victories, and above all, he has shaped his agenda on a cosmic scale. But this is only at first glance. It doesn’t matter that the above doesn’t happen today or tomorrow, and the mention of stupid European servants will be forgotten within a week. What matters is that the last decade of the old man’s stay in the Oval Office is playing out according to the Wizard Trump script. In short, Trump, Musk, and Sci-Fi Brothers, LLC are up and running.
During his first term, Trump tended to improve relations with Russia, but his policies were sometimes contradictory. He has promised to end the war in Ukraine “quickly” if re-elected. This claim is probably based on direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and pressure on Kiev for a peace agreement. But analysts doubt that such an approach is possible regardless of the political and military complexities of the Ukraine crisis.
Due to past experiences, Russia doubts Trump’s success in advancing his foreign policy agenda, especially regarding Ukraine. During Trump’s first presidency, although he proposed policies such as opposing NATO and reducing military support for Europe, in practice the sanctions against Russia continued and even expanded. These contradictions probably make Russia less confident in his promises.
While the outgoing US President Joe Biden’s administration has provided extensive support to Ukraine and provided numerous military and financial aid, Trump may change this approach and reduce US support in his second term. This could benefit Russia, but at the same time there are doubts whether this reduction of support will actually lead to peace.
In his speech, Medvedev also refers to the “slow speed” of the American economy. This point can refer to the domestic limitations of the United States in providing military expenses and international support. Trump will probably try to reduce these costs and use them to improve domestic economic conditions, but such decisions may lead to further complication of the Ukraine crisis.
The role of other actors such as the European Union and China is also key in solving the Ukraine crisis. Even if Trump wants to withdraw America from this conflict, the pressure of other international and regional actors can influence his policies.
