Germany suspended its aid to Georgia
Germany has suspended 200 million euros ($208 million) in aid to Georgia because of the country’s “anti-European trend” and is discussing sanctions with its EU partners.
According to RCO News Agency, German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said that these sanctions will include the cancellation of visa-free travel for officials and the imposition of targeted sanctions.
He said: “In recent weeks and months, the Georgian Dream Party has increasingly distanced the country from the European Union and is seriously endangering Georgia’s long-standing cooperation with Germany.” As a result, we have reduced cooperation with the country’s authorities and stopped supporting projects worth more than 200 million euros.
The German foreign minister added: “Berlin is simultaneously discussing further measures with EU partners, from the cancellation of the visa-free regime for Georgian officials to the introduction of targeted sanctions.”
According to Berbuk, the Georgian Dream has gone through an anti-European period, effectively stalling the country’s accession to the European Union. The EU could formally consider this process in response to Georgia’s alleged Dream policies, as the granting of EU candidate status in December 2023 is tied to the fulfillment of reform commitments.
He emphasized: The majority of Georgian citizens want to continue the European path of their country. They carry Europe in their hearts and pro-European protests are their voice.
