Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt described the emergence of Deepseek as a turning point in global artificial intelligence competition and called for increased US efforts to counter Deepseek growth.
Schmidt, who said last year, the United States was two to three years ahead of China, said that the emergence of Deepseek is a turning point in the global artificial intelligence competition, stressing that China could compete with technology giants using less resources. In his view, this shows that the United States should also expand its efforts in the field of open source artificial intelligence.
Deepseek’s artificial intelligence successes
Schmidt emphasized that in order to counter Deepseek’s advances, the United States should develop more open source models, invest in artificial intelligence infrastructure such as the Stargate project, and ask leading research laboratories to share their training methods. He urged the United States to reinforce cooperation, develop competitive solutions to artificial intelligence, and respond to changes in power in global competition in the field of artificial intelligence.
Schmidt had previously called for US investment in artificial intelligence. The Schmidt White Stork startup will probably provide artificial intelligence -equipped drones in the future for the US military. He has also invested in Holistic AI, which helps companies comply with artificial intelligence laws, and in Augment, Gitithub Copilot rival, which uses open source models.
Deepseek is a Chinese artificial intelligence company founded in 2023. In January 2025, the company released its latest model, Deepseek-R1, which has attracted much attention due to its advanced reasoning capabilities. This model is said to have a comparable functionality to leading artificial intelligence systems such as Openai ChatGPT, but it is much lower. Deepseek-R1 supply has created a wave in the technology industry and has reduced the stock prices of large companies such as Nvidia, Meta and Microsoft.
