Poland’s acknowledgment of inability to form a Ukrainian legion
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski admitted that Warsaw has not yet been able to form a battalion of Ukrainian citizens living in the country for the Ukrainian army because there are not enough volunteers.
According to Isna, the Polish newspaper Dzienik Gazeta Prawna reported on September 9 that plans to create a Ukrainian Legion in Poland from Ukrainian citizens living in the republic will not be implemented within the time frame set by the parties.
According to Sputnik, Sikorsky said in an interview with the Ukrainian publication Pravda Europe: We still do not have enough volunteers to form a battalion.
In July, Poland and Ukraine signed a new agreement on long-term military cooperation. This includes the training of a Ukrainian Legion, a new military unit, on Polish soil. It is assumed that Ukrainians interested in joining the Legion will be equipped in Polish units at Polish expense.
In response to the agreement between Poland and Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in June that Moscow does not care what agreements Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed.
