A Japanese artist paints fantastic drawings of animals on rocks he finds in nature.
Akie Nakata considers himself a “rock artist” and for him rocks are more than just a hard object in nature. Instead of using ordinary canvases, Nakata paints realistic and detailed images of animals on the surface of stones. From owl chicks to otters and monkeys can be seen in the paintings of this artist.
Aki Nakata doesn’t have a particular subject in mind when collecting stones for painting, and takes inspiration from the natural lines on them. He does not make any changes on this canvas so that it has its natural state. For Nakata, the shape of each stone, from the smallest pebble to the largest boulder, is part of his story and plays an important role in the final work. This Japanese artist says:
In order to extract an impression from the heart of the stone, I proceed very carefully. For example, I have to consider whether I have placed the spine in the right place. I constantly ask myself, does the design I make on the stone match the natural shape of the stone?
