Excavating in the Netherlands, archaeologists discovered the remains of a rare 500-year-old wooden shoe sole.
The Dutch are famous around the world for using wooden shoes, but the recent rare discovery of a 500-year-old shoe sole in Alkmaar, a city in the Netherlands, has shown how common the use of this type of shoe was at one time in history.
Archaeologist “Silk Lang” said about this new discovery: This shoe was found in a pit in an urban environment. So it’s very special because farmers were always thought to wear wooden shoes while working. But this wooden shoe was found in the urban context. They used this type of shoes for daily activities.
According to Reuters, the wooden shoe was found in a pit that was discovered last month during the construction of an underground waste container in Alkmaar, about 30 kilometers northwest of Amsterdam.
Experts estimate that this wooden shoe, which is made in European size 36, was probably made in the late 15th or early 16th century.
This shoe is the first wooden shoe made of birch wood, and it is one of the 44 wooden shoes discovered during excavations in the Netherlands and Belgium.
