“Nazca Lines” are a series of huge and mysterious patterns in the Nazca desert in southern Peru, which were created by the Nazca civilization between 500 BC and 500 AD. These motifs include straight lines, geometric shapes, and large images of animals and plants, created with great precision and using simple techniques such as removing the surface layers of red sand and soil to reveal the lighter layers underneath. The largest of these motifs is 370 meters long and can only be seen and recognized from a height. Some famous images include spiders, monkeys, hummingbirds and lizards.
The reason and purpose of drawing the Nazca lines has not been precisely determined until today. Several theories have been proposed from religious and ritual aspects, astronomical maps, irrigation signs or even messages to visitors from the sky. The Nazca Lines are recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and have attracted the attention of many researchers, historians and tourists. These patterns still remain as one of the archeological mysteries that have kept their secrets hidden deep in the Peruvian desert.
