While it is heard that Iran Khodro will import Peugeot 408X cars into the country, but is it possible to import Peugeot cars despite the sanctions?
With the rumors of the arrival of the first Peugeot 408X in Iran by Iran Khodro Company, speculations about the return of Peugeot cars to the country’s market rose. Iran Khodro has announced that it will sell this car to the market first as an import and then as an assembly. But does this mean the presence of the French lion again on the roads of Iran?
Assembling a French car under embargo conditions is a question that journalists sought to answer. They followed up the matter directly by contacting the Peugeot company in France. The answer of Peugeot’s marketing and communication unit was unexpected: “Stelantis and the Peugeot brand adhere to all international regulations and do not sell any products in Iran.” The company has also ordered its employees and business partners to comply with these regulations.
This answer is published while unofficial news indicates the possibility of resuming negotiations with the West and improving relations. Nevertheless, it seems that Peugeot does not intend to officially return to Iran at the moment.
Many experts believed that the re-appearance of Peugeot in Iran will open the way for other western car manufacturers. But according to Peugeot’s official answer, these hopes have faded for now.
A history of the relationship between Peugeot and Iran
After the revolution, Iran’s automobile industry established deep ties with French automobile manufacturers, especially Peugeot. With the signing of the JCPOA, this relationship got a new lease of life and Peugeot enthusiastically planned to take over a larger share of the Iranian market. But the withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA and the return of sanctions caused Peugeot to quickly withdraw from Iran and violate its agreements.
Many interpreted this behavior of Peugeot as a kind of bad faith and demanded to stop cooperation with this company. But now we see that the state-owned automakers are knocking on any door to cooperate with French brands, even if this cooperation is informal and mediated. This shows the difficult situation of the automobile industry and its dependence on foreign companies.
