Climatology scientists predict that the global temperature will cross an important threshold in 2024 and reach a critical state.
Based on the statistics obtained so far from the temperature of the earth in 2024, it seems that this year will be the first year that the average temperature of the earth will increase by 1.5 degrees compared to the average temperature of the years before human industrialization (1859-1900). will be accompanied. This unpleasant event occurs while last year also recorded a rise in temperature, which was about 0.6 degrees Celsius higher than the average for the years 1991 to 2020.
These data are based on the findings of the most reliable atmospheric analysis institutes in the world and presented at the COP29 global climate change event held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. At the beginning of this year, the El Nino cycle was the most important factor that caused the extreme warming of the earth. However, the heat continued even several months later and showed no sign of stopping.
Earth’s temperature will reach critical conditions in 2024
The continuous warming of the planet occurs in a situation where a huge number of people and animals die every day due to the ever-increasing use of fossil fuels all over the world. Fossil fuels also play a prominent role in the occurrence of natural disasters; Because the abundant energy and high heat caused by the combustion of these fuels, which are sent to the upper layers of the atmosphere, are the main reason for climate change and the occurrence of strange weather phenomena. Among these strange weather phenomena, we can mention the recent floods and heavy rains in Valencia, Spain, the terrible tornado Milton in America, and the loss of millions of tons of rice in Bangladesh.
in this area, WHO reported that despite this sharp increase in temperature in 2024, it still cannot be claimed that global warming has exceeded the Paris Agreement; Because the numbers and figures related to this treaty are set based on multi-year averages and short-term parameters such as El Nino or La Nina storms are not able to permanently change it.
At the same time, some other scientists have claimed that the level of global warming has crossed the danger threshold and if it continues, we should expect the destruction of some important life systems on the planet. Among these life systems, we can mention the main system of waves in the Atlantic Ocean or the dense forests of Amazon and polar ice.
In this context, Mark Moden, an Australian climatologist, claimed that if global and industrial powers do not act to deal with this increase in temperature, an increase in temperature of about 3 degrees is not out of the question. He claimed that the current range of temperature increase on the planet is about 1.25 degrees per year. At the same time, reaching this number to the threshold of 2.5 to 2.93 will lead to irreparable climate effects that will impose heavy costs on governments.
Of course, the clear solution to reduce the staggering rate of this temperature increase in the world is to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and produce less carbon dioxide. However, despite the fact that many major countries in the world have made reducing fuel consumption their top priority since the 1990s, the amount of greenhouse gas production in the world is still increasing rapidly.
Regardless of whether the increase in global temperature in 2024 is at a critical threshold or not, the important point in this regard is that the more we reduce the amount of fossil fuel consumption, the more we can make the earth a safer place for our future generations. The purpose of events like COP29 is to emphasize exactly this issue; However, the rumors and suspicions related to the attempt of the Azerbaijani government to close heavy oil and fossil contracts during this event have caused many worries and discomforts among the experts.
