Epic Games, the developer of the popular video game Fortnite, has filed a lawsuit against Alphabet (owned by Google) and Samsung. Epic Games has accused the two major tech companies of creating a monopoly in the mobile software market and limiting healthy competition.
According to Tekna Technology Media Technology News Service, in the lawsuit submitted to the United States Federal Court, Epic Games claims that Google and Samsung illegally prevented competition by imposing restrictions on the installation of software from sources other than their official stores. Consumers have been harmed. According to Epic, the “auto-blocking” feature implemented by Samsung on its smartphones is enabled by default and prevents users from downloading apps from sources other than the Google Play Store or the Samsung Galaxy Store.
Epic Games believes that these actions were taken by Google and Samsung with the aim of maintaining their monopoly in the mobile software distribution market and increasing their share of revenue from the sale of applications and in-app services. The company also claims that the two companies have indirectly raised prices by limiting consumer options.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, said: These actions by large technology companies are a clear example of monopolistic behavior that ends up at the expense of consumers and independent developers. We seek to create a competitive marketplace where consumers can freely download the apps they want from a variety of sources. Google has not yet officially responded to these allegations. But Samsung has stated in a statement that the security features of its devices are designed to protect users’ personal data, and the company will vigorously defend Epic Games’ baseless claims.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against large technology companies. Previously, Epic Games had sued Apple due to the strict policies of the App Store. This new lawsuit has once again sparked a heated debate about the monopoly of big tech companies and its impact on digital markets.
