The Russian-Ukrainian war has been the scene of some of the most advanced and newest military technologies in the world. Here we will get to know some of these things.
The war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022, is considered the biggest conflict in Europe after World War II. However, unlike that great battle, we have witnessed the use of very advanced equipment and technologies in the war between these two countries. Russia, as one of the three largest armies in the world, contrary to predictions, could not lead the battle as expected; Because the Ukrainians, with the help of European countries and America, showed incredible resistance against them. In the war between Russia and Ukraine, we saw the use of new and very advanced technologies, some of which were used for the first time in the battlefields. Today, we are trying to take a look at some of these extremely advanced but dangerous weapons and technologies that we have seen being used in the last two and a half years.
The most advanced technologies and weapons used in the war between Russia and Ukraine
Among the military equipment used in the Ukrainian war, some were used for communication and reconnaissance purposes, while others were designed for combat and destruction. At the same time, all these tools used by both sides are new, deadly and advanced.
Starlink
In the world of modern military campaigns, the Internet is also considered a logistical tool and has the same importance as weapons, ammunition, and weapons. Almost all the processes that occur in modern battlefields, from communication and location to the control of weapons, are done through the Internet. . In the meantime, putting the Starlink satellite communication system at the disposal of Ukrainians was one of the reasons that put Elon Musk at the top of the news.
On both sides of the battle, many weapons are controlled via the Internet. Nevertheless, Starlink has been able to provide stable and high-quality Internet access anywhere in the world by using satellites that rotate in orbits close to the earth. With the help of Starlink, the Ukrainian army has been able to achieve relative superiority in the modern war against Russia and use its drone fleet in different places. In addition to reconnaissance and surveillance uses, the army of this country has also launched and executed attacks inside the territory of Russia through Starlink high-speed internet.
Clearview AI facial recognition
In military operations on the battlefields, there is not much need to identify faces. However, when the battlefield is overcrowded or a part of the military operation needs to be carried out in urban areas, accurate recognition of the target’s face becomes very important.
Until now, fingerprint sensors were considered as the most important methods of identifying the identity of people in intelligence and military services. However, artificial intelligence has introduced identification systems into a newer space. In particular, Clearview’s AI is one of those that has found widespread military use, with Ukrainians using technologies based on it to identify targets in more than 18 different agencies.
Clearview has an extremely wide and comprehensive database and provides the possibility of quickly identifying the nature of people by displaying even one image. The main use of Clearview artificial intelligence technology by the Ukrainians in transit bases is to identify wanted persons, find missing persons and children, and identify dead soldiers.
Witness drone 136
Another advanced technology claimed by the West to be used in the war between Russia and Ukraine is Shahid 136 drones. These suicide drones, which have a wingspan of about 2.5 meters, are able to reach a maximum speed of 185 km/h and seriously test air defenses.
Ukrainian sources claim that Russia has used about 2,000 witness drones in combat since 2023. Of course, Shahid 136, unlike many reconnaissance drones, has a clear engine sound and can be identified. However, its suicidal nature makes it not so easy to deal with them.
The witness drone can weigh about 200 kilos and fly at an altitude of 15,000 feet. This drone also has the ability to carry up to 40 kg of explosives and is capable of causing serious damage to military and civilian areas.
Reports indicate that a new generation of Shahid UAVs under the name Shahid 238 is currently under development and their production will begin soon.
General Dynamics F-16
History buffs probably remember the US Army’s F-16 aircraft from the Cold War; Where these planes were designed to defeat the Soviet MiG fighters and were sent to the skies of Europe. However, it seems that years after the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the F-16 got a chance to stand against the Russian MiGs this time.
Of course, these memorable fighters are not going to play much of a role in the offensive operations of the Ukrainian army; Rather, their main goal will be to protect the skies of different Ukrainian cities from large-scale air or drone attacks of the Russian army. Of course, the F-16s basically belong to the 70s. However, the US Air Force has been able to keep them up to date and turn them into capable fighters in modern battles; So that the presence of F-16 in the Ukrainian air fleet has been able to give them a significant advantage in some operations.
The four countries of Norway, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands together have provided about 90 F-16 fighter planes to the Ukrainian army.
BMP tank
Another survivor of the Cold War is the Soviet BMP tank, which was once the most important weapon of Russia. However, in the recent battle between Russia and Ukraine, we have seen the use of these tanks by both countries.
The first generation of the BMP tank belonged to the 1960s and weighed about 13.5 tons. This tank was equipped with a 73 mm gun and a 20 mm machine gun and was able to carry about seven passengers. In the 1980s, the Soviets upgraded this tank to the second generation and equipped it with 30 mm cannons. Also, the third generation of this powerful tank has the ability to fire 100 mm rockets.
A major part of the war between Russia and Ukraine takes place on the battlefields, and during the last two years, BMP tanks have been widely used by both sides. The deterioration of the situation of weapons in the recent battle of these two countries is such that sometimes we see the use of different generations of BMP tanks in some conflicts.
Advanced missile systems
One of the most important areas that turns the war between Ukraine and Russia into a battle like World War II is the widespread presence of heavy weapons such as missiles and tanks. However, the technologies used in the war between Russia and Ukraine are much more advanced than in the 30s and 40s, and rockets and missiles are generally launched from tanks and modern mobile rocket launchers.
Powers such as the United States and England, with the support of countries such as Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and France, have provided Ukraine with thousands of rocket launchers and mobile missile systems during the war. In particular, America, in cooperation with European countries, has succeeded in developing the S-300 defense system and several guided missile systems and helping Ukraine a lot.
During the war, Ukraine also received the M777 missile launcher, along with 82 HIMARS missile systems and numerous long-range missiles from France and England, and America also provided the Ukrainian army with the ATACMS missile system capable of attacking targets at a distance of three hundred kilometers.
Unmanned aerial vehicle TB2
One of the biggest technological advantages of Russia over Ukraine has been the dominance of the country’s military in the skies. In response to this impressive superiority, the Ukrainians used the Turkish drone and the noisy TB2 drone, and in the first months of the war, when its continuation was still uncertain, it assumed the responsibility of monitoring, identifying and attacking Russian fighters.
Of course, this drone does not have the ability to stand up against an extremely powerful air force such as the Russian army; But its fame was due to its brilliance in the early days of the war, when the Russians were not yet ready to launch their defenses. At the same time, Russia was finally able to downplay the presence of unmanned aerial vehicles on the battlefield with appropriate strategies and reduce their popularity.
It should be kept in mind that the Turkish drone was made without a crew. Therefore, its suicidal and destructive effect cannot be compared with passenger planes. At the same time, these birds, which fly at medium altitude, were able to give the upper hand to the Ukrainians in the field of reconnaissance and attack in the first days of the war.
Magura V5
Among all the advanced and new technologies that we saw in the war between Ukraine and Russia, marine and submarine equipment have a special place. In particular, the Ukrainians have the Magura V submarine, which has caused a lot of trouble for Russian ships.
As you are probably aware, a large part of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is taking place in the Black Sea, where the Crimean Peninsula is located. The Magura V is the star of Ukraine’s naval battle against Russia, capable of devastating mass attacks on enemy vessels and ships. The maximum speed of this vessel is 100 km/h and it has a cruising speed of 45 km/h. In addition, the length of the Magura 5 float is about 5.5 meters and its width is 1.5 meters.
This vessel has the ability to connect to Starlink antennas and can receive and execute commands through it. On the other hand, in case of approaching the land, Magura 5 is able to communicate with GPS receivers on the land surface with the help of this connection system.
It should be noted that the Magura V submarine has so far managed to sink a Serena-class frigate and a Russian Akola-class frigate.
