In a recent announcement by the US Food and Drug Administration, smart watches will not be allowed to access blood sugar levels and accurately measure them without a needle.
According to Tekna technology and technology news service, many big technology companies such as Apple are trying to equip their smart watches and other wearable gadgets with technology to monitor the blood sugar level of users. Meanwhile, the United States Food and Drug Administration announced in its recent statement that this technology was not sufficiently accurate and did not approve its use due to the possibility of misdiagnosis.
In an article published by this organization, it was announced that these wearable devices monitor blood glucose levels without piercing the skin, and only the sensors of these devices are used in this method. For this reason, this method may lead to incorrect measurements. This organization emphasized that currently, which of the smart watches and similar devices cannot directly evaluate the blood glucose level of the users.
In this report, it is pointed out that people with diabetes may switch to using insulin with the wrong amount based on this technology alone or take their other medications relying on this technology. This false result can lead to the death of these patients. This organization has only approved wearable devices that continuously monitor blood sugar.
Some tech companies, including Apple, are focusing on technologies to measure blood glucose levels without needing to pierce the skin. Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration has directly expressed its opposition to the use of this technology. In a report last year, Bloomberg tested prototypes produced by Apple and called them successful. Apple's experiments are carried out with the help of silicon photonics technology and a process called optical absorption spectroscopy, in which wavelengths of light are shined into the area under the skin with the help of a laser.
