Amir Lajordi, Deputy Minister of Communications, announced the preparation of preparations to provide satellite internet in Iran legally and with the cooperation of an operator. Stay with us for more details.
Finally, after several years, whispers of satellite internet entering the country are heard. It was almost two weeks ago that the Regulatory and Radio Communications Organization was investigating the conditions of Starlink Internet activity inside the country.
Satellite Internet in Iran is not the end of filtering!
The provision of satellite internet services in Iran, in addition to the condition of complying with territorial laws, also requires the protection of public interests; It means that the provision of internet services by foreign satellites does not mean that these operators have no filtering and the service providers are required to comply with the laws of the Islamic Republic.
Amir Lajurdi, the head of the Organization for Regulation and Radio Communications, said in this regard:
Regarding satellite internet, there are laws approved by the Supreme Council of Cyber Space. After the speech of the Minister of Communications regarding the reception of satellite internet activities in the country such as Starlink (SpaceX) services in June 1402, the Regulatory and Radio Communications Organization issued a call stating that companies that are ready to provide satellite-based communication services, announce readiness Regulations related to this technology have already been established in the country. In 1397, we discussed the principles governing satellite operators, and in 1399, we discussed territorial laws and principles governing them. When this technology enters the country, there will not be much difference and change in the laws and we hope that the satellite operators will start their cooperation with the regulatory organization in the form of the same regulations.
Further, the head of the regulator added that we are currently preparing preparations for the start of cooperation and it is not clear when satellite internet will be available to people.
The process of providing this service is related to the type of cooperation of the service provider operator. Now we are in the stage of initial tests of the service with the operator who is a satellite internet provider and has expressed his desire to cooperate by participating in the call.
Regarding the willingness of satellite internet service providers to cooperate, as well as the International Telecommunication Union’s emphasis on Starlink’s cooperation with Iran, Lajordi said:
Although it is impossible to say for sure whether SpaceX will abide by this decision or not, the ITU is an agency that countries have changed because of their interests, and certainly if they do not abide by the rules, when they themselves suffer in the field of telecommunications rules. become a problem, they cannot expect their complaints to be addressed. The RRB threatens some countries that if they do not accept the regulations, they will be deprived of the right to vote or the services that the union provides, which will cause serious problems for them.
