Google has unveiled a new experimental developer platform called Project IDX. Google’s goal with this action is to challenge Microsoft’s VS Code to help developers of artificial intelligence tools to create applications. IDX combines a cloud-based workspace with artificial intelligence coding aids to simplify application development.
According to Hoshio, Google has created a new online platform called Project IDX that provides developers with tools to build and code AI faster through a new web-based workspace.
This new pilot initiative aims to give developers access to the entire application development workflow through the cloud. Developers can use the workspace directly from their browsers and can even access existing apps from GitHub, making app development easier than ever.
Project IDX works on multiple platforms and frameworks including Angular, Next.js, React, Svelte and Flutter. The company said that support for Python and Go will also be available soon.
With IDX, Google is competing with Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code, which is a popular development platform. Google intends to attract more developers and gain a larger share of this market.
Since the beginning of this year, Microsoft and Google have challenged each other in various aspects of artificial intelligence, and the introduction of a new development platform cannot be a different event.
When building with Project IDX, users can preview their apps as if their users were viewing them. Google has announced that it plans to support built-in multi-browser web previews, Android emulators, and iOS emulators for this purpose.
IDX also gives users access to Codey, a basic AI model built on top of Google’s flagship AI model PalM 2. Codey on Trained Code, the platform features a smart code completion, assistive chat bot and text code commands that allow users to interact with it using simple natural language commands such as “explain this code”.
Google envisions Project IDX as a way to reduce the complexity of software development, and the goal of the pilot project is to “create a better workflow for building, shipping, and managing apps.”
