The wait is almost over and Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth major installment in Capcom’s popular horror series, is ready for release and the reviews are pouring in one after the other.
Directed by Koshi Nakanishi (lead designer of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard), Requiem follows the two main characters. Ollie Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a journalist from the Resident Evil Outbreak series. Grace, now an FBI agent, is still mourning her mother, who was brutally murdered in front of her eyes. But he tries to move on with his life until an FBI investigation derails and leads him into a nightmare he never imagined. He finally meets the second character of the story; That is, an older and more mature version of Leanne S. Kennedy, the popular secret agent who returns to the remains of Raccoon City to investigate rumors she heard about survivors of an accident in the city. In the following, we will have a look at a summary of published reviews of this game.

As the result of an experiment conducted in an underground laboratory of Umbrella Corporation, Resident Evil Requiem has successfully combined the two elements of fear and survival to create a new and highly contagious mutant. This game marks the return of a series legend and introduces a new and lovable protagonist, takes the violence to a new and disturbing level, introduces a scarier type of zombies along with truly gruesome boss battles. The lack of significant side content like The Mercenaries mode is a little disappointing, and I also wonder if there could have been more of a balance between the ups and downs of breath-taking moments of fear and all-out attacks, instead of making the opening part of the story piled high with horror and the latter half turning into a shooting range. However, from my first shaky steps in its shadows to its grand finale, Resident Evil Requiem kept me completely engrossed and non-stop entertained, whether in the angst-filled scenes or the gun-toting sequences.

For nearly a decade, Capcom has been refining and updating the Resident Evil franchise, finding ways to modernize the legendary franchise while maintaining the essence of its popularity. With Requiem, it can be said that Capcom has pushed Resident Evil as far as possible to the final limit of its evolution. The result is a game that relies too much on past successes and nostalgia and therefore does not offer new ideas to its fans. But he knows his strengths carefully and implements them almost perfectly.

Requiem is not just a horror game or just an action game; It’s a heartwarming celebration of Resident Evil, the legendary series on the cusp of its 30th anniversary, and the more it borrows and reinvents from the past, the more it feels like a gift to fans. This feeling ripples in that building as if it is a return to the starting point, in changing camera angles and changing spaces, in different item management systems from two different eras, in typewriter ribbons and in those super old puzzles. This sense is also evident in a dual campaign reminiscent of Resident Evil 6, in an upgrade system for Leanne that looks like it’s straight out of The Mercenaries mode, and in many other instances. I don’t want to elaborate, partly because Capcom understandably wants to keep Requiem’s biggest surprises under wraps, and partly because I don’t want to spoil their impact for you, but the more the game leaned into its heritage, the bigger the smile on my face.
Game Informer / 9.8 out of 10
Unlike the previous installments of the series, which took the adventures to a ridiculous level of heroism, the story of Grace is full of suffering and horror. Just when it gets too much, Leanne comes in with her action scenes, mortar-throwing zombies, motorcycle chases, epic battles, and the likes we’ve come to expect from her. Capcom skillfully interweaves these two storylines so that neither the horror of Grease becomes boring nor the repetitive action lean.

On paper, Resident Evil Requiem is essentially a two-in-one package that offers both great survival horror gameplay and action. It’s the same in practice, but the playing time imbalance between the two is such that you see too much of one and not enough of the other. In the end, this is another great episode, you just might not find everything you’re looking for.

Requiem not only revives the Resident Evil formula, but perfects it in the series’ most angsty and sad installment to date. This game more than satisfies fans’ need for blood and horror, leaves room for the future and makes us more eager than ever to continue the series.

On its own, Requiem is fantastic and a truly brilliant installment in the original collection. The game still maintains the fine line between horror and action, and while Grace may not have the spinning kicks and witty dialogue of Liane, it can always rely on Requiem. This game is designed to challenge you, without pushing you to the limit of insanity (unless you go for Insanity difficulty). Capcom has once again delivered a polished and beautiful Resident Evil game, but it doesn’t rank among the best.
Resident Evil 9 will be available on February 27 (March 8) for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. This game has managed to get a meta score of 88 on the PlayStation 5 platform on the Metacritic website out of a total of 116 published reviews.
