KRAFTON has recently unveiled Project Windless, an open-world role-playing game.
Developed by KRAFTON Montreal since 2022, the game is an adaptation of the Korean fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears. Designed as an open-world, player-choice experience, it focuses on a conflict on the scale of a continent and combines an epic narrative with brutal, skill-based combat and epic battles. takes Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game has a non-linear structure where the player’s decisions through exploration, combat and interaction with key factions, alliances and the overall course of the war shape the entire world.
Project Windless game is designed in such a way that it can be understood by new players, and instead of being directly adapted from novels, the story of the game takes place about 1500 years before the original narrative; In an under-explored mythic period when legends were still being formed. This approach allows Project Windless to both serve as a convenient entry point for a global audience and expand the universe of the novels for longtime fans. There are four intelligent races in this world including humans, Rekon, Nhaga and Tokkebi. Each race has its own culture, conflicts and worldview.
In this work, the players are placed in the role of “Shah Kahraman”; A legendary and powerful warrior of the Rekun race. Rekons are very large bird-like creatures known for their immense strength and violence. Armed with two special blades, the Heroic King takes down dozens of enemies at once, confronts massive creatures, and leads allied forces when battles reach epic proportions. As they grow in fame and build relationships around the world, players unite different races and factions and, through their actions, shape the foundations of a future kingdom.
At the core of Project Windless is Mass technology; A technology that enables the simultaneous engagement of thousands of soldiers and massive creatures on dynamic battlefields. The combat is completely real-time, fast and skill-oriented. Rather than commanding from afar, players fight directly in the heart of massive conflicts, turning the tide of battle by combining precision combat skill and tactical decision-making.
Patrik Methe, president of Crofton Montreal Studios and creative director of the game, said:
From the very beginning, we asked ourselves what it would mean to play a legendary character in a fantasy world. For us, this means giving the player real control, not just in combat, but in how wars progress, alliances are formed, and history is written. Project Windless is based on the idea that a fairy tale is not something you just watch; Rather, it is something you actively create through play.
The development of Project Windless is led in close collaboration with teams in South Korea. The collaboration combines the western development expertise of Crofton Montreal Studios with a strong focus on cultural authenticity and world-building inspired by Korean mythology. It is said that this game is designed as a premium and completely single-player experience and does not have any multiplayer or live service elements.
The game will be released for consoles including PlayStation 5 and PC. The release date has not yet been announced. You can see the trailer and published images below.
