While Sony recently updated its portfolio of wearable products with the introduction of LinkBuds Clip, many audio enthusiasts were still waiting for the unveiling of the new generation of the popular WF-1000X series. Now, thanks to a new leak from a Thai retailer, the first images and technical details of the company’s upcoming flagship, the Sony WF-1000XM6 AirPods, are available. This information, which was on the store’s website for a short time and then removed, indicates significant changes in the design and possibly an increase in the price of this product.
Based on the published images, the design of the new AirPods has been changed compared to the fifth generation. The body of the phones seems a bit wider and Sony has decided to use a full matte coating for the body, which could be an answer to the criticism of users about the smudgeability of the previous glossy models. The charging case also has a new design that looks like a rectangular prism with rounded corners and has a matte finish like the earbuds themselves. According to this report, this product will be launched in at least two colors, black and silver.

But the most important possible changes have occurred in the internal hardware department. The analysis of the images shows that a second mesh (Grille) has been added on the body of each earbud. Experts believe that this feature indicates the addition of another external microphone. If this hypothesis is correct, then the Sony WF-1000XM6 earbuds will be equipped with a total of three external microphones and one internal microphone (a total of four microphones for each earpiece). Meanwhile, the current XM5 model uses three microphones on each side. Such an upgrade can bring the quality of active noise cancellation (ANC) and voice clarity in conversations to a new level and make this product a serious option to win the title. In addition, the leaked listing confirms that these earbuds have an IPX4 splash-proof standard and still use foam tips that provide better insulation. The controversial point of this report is the price listed for this product. The Thai retailer had priced it at 11,990 baht, roughly equivalent to $380 or €322. For comparison, the previous generation was released at a price of 300 dollars. If this pricing is true, we should expect a significant price increase in Sony’s new flagship. Although Sony has not yet given an official reaction, the volume and accuracy of the leaked information show that the time of official introduction is very close.
