Google on Friday announced a beta version of a new feature that lets users hear real-time translation of conversations directly through their headphones. At the same time, the company has added advanced Gemini features to Google Translate and expanded its language learning tools.
Real-time translation in headphones; Each headphone is a live translator
According to Google, the new feature of real-time translation with headphones preserves the speaker’s tone, emphasis, and pitch; A theme that makes it easier to follow the conversation and recognize different speakers. This feature practically turns any pair of headphones into a one-way, real-time translator.
Rose Yao, Google’s vice president of product management, explains:
“Whether you want to have a conversation in another language, listen to a lecture abroad or watch a movie or series in a different language, just put on your headphones, open the Translate app and tap the live translation option to hear the translation instantly.”
The beta version of this feature is now available in the Translate app on Android in the United States, Mexico, and India. This feature works with any type of headphones and supports more than 70 languages. Google has announced that it will expand this feature to iOS and more countries in 2026.
Gemini makes translations more natural
Google has also added advanced Gemini features to Google Translate; A feature that provides smarter, more natural and more accurate text translations. This improvement is especially noticeable in the translation of terms, slang expressions and concepts with semantic subtlety.
For example, an expression like “stealing my thunder” is no longer translated word for word; Rather, Gemini detects the true meaning of the term by analyzing the context of the sentence and provides a more accurate translation. The update is now live in the US and India, enabling translation between English and nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and German. This feature is available in Android, iOS and web versions of Google Translate.
Expanding language learning tools; Closer to Duolingo
Google has expanded its language learning tools to about 20 new countries, including Germany, India, Sweden and Taiwan. English-speaking users can practice German, and learners fluent in Bengali, Simplified Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, German, Hindi, Italian, Romanian, and Swedish can practice English.
Also, more detailed feedback has been added to the conversation practice section so that users can receive practical tips based on their performance. Another new feature tracks the number of consecutive learning days; A possibility that helps to maintain the motivation and continuity of learning and brings the Google Translate experience closer to applications like Duolingo.
With the addition of real-time translation in headphones and the inclusion of Gemini in the core of Google Translate, Google has taken an important step to make translation and language learning a more natural, intelligent and always available experience; A path that can stabilize the position of this service beyond a simple translation tool.
