Google on Thursday unveiled a new AI-based experiment for web browsing. This feature, called “Disco” and powered by the Gemini model, allows users to turn their open browser tabs into customized and interactive applications.
GenTabs; Applications that are built from the heart of the web
At the core of Disco is a feature called “GenTabs”; A tool that proactively suggests interactive web applications tailored to the content the user is browsing. In addition, users can create their own applications by just writing text commands.
For example, if you’re studying a scientific topic, GenTabs can suggest building a visual app to illustrate and simplify the concepts. Or, in a more everyday scenario, the tool can create a meal plan from a collection of online recipes or help plan a trip when searching for travel destinations.
Beyond chatbots; An in-browser experience
Although doing such tasks was possible before with artificial intelligence chatbots, GenTabs creates these experiences instantly and directly in the browser. Using Gemini 3, this feature generates custom applications based on information from open browser tabs and the user’s conversation history with Gemini.
After the application is created, users can modify and complete it with natural language grammar. Generative elements in GenTabs are always linked to original sources of information to maintain transparency and referability, according to Google.
Google’s path in making the web experience smarter
Like other players in the AI market, Google is experimenting with ways to deepen AI’s presence in the web browsing experience. Unlike companies like Perplexity or OpenAI, which are looking to build independent artificial intelligence browsers, Google has decided to integrate the artificial intelligence assistant Gemini directly into the Chrome browser; Where users can optionally ask questions about the page they are viewing.
In GenTabs, the focus is not just on the current page, but the entire user browsing pattern across multiple tabs—from research and learning to planning.
Limited supply and the future of Disco
This feature is currently only available to a limited number of users through Google Labs to gather early feedback. Google says that interesting ideas formed in Disco may find their way into other major products of the company in the future.
Also, GenTabs is only the “first feature” of Disco, and Google has emphasized that more features will be added to this test in the future.
Disco and GenTabs show that Google is looking to redefine the role of the browser; From a simple tool for viewing the web, to a smart platform that can build exclusive and dynamic applications based on user behavior. If this experiment is successful, Chrome could become one of the most serious arenas of AI competition in the web experience.
