New reports from the supply chain show that Apple has very ambitious plans to enter the flexible phone market, and the production volume of the foldable iPhone will far exceed the previous predictions of experts. According to the news published by the ET News website, Apple has ordered the production of 22 million OLED display panels to Samsung Display (Samsung Display). This huge volume of orders shows the high confidence of Cupertinos in the success of the first generation of this product, which is going to change the rules of the game in the folding phone market.
According to the published details, Samsung plans to mass produce 11 million internal folding screens and 11 million external screens for Apple next year. Since Samsung Display is the exclusive supplier of these parts, analysts estimate that Apple’s ultimate goal is to produce and sell around 10 million foldable iPhones. Usually, companies order slightly more parts than the number of final devices to compensate for production line waste and to ensure quality. This statistic is about 30% more than the initial estimates of the industry, which previously predicted the sale of this product between 6 and 8 million units.
In terms of design, this device is expected to have a book-style structure and fold inwards. The dimensions of the external display are reported to be 5.35 inches and the internal foldable display is 7.58 inches. To solve the challenges in similar products, Apple engineers have used advanced hinges and special materials to minimize the crease in the middle of the screen. This issue has always been one of the main concerns of users in using foldable phones, and Apple intends to solve it with its strict standards.
Additionally, Apple is rumored to use Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) technology. This method reduces the thickness of the display and increases its brightness by removing the traditional polarizing layer and integrating it into the OLED structure. Also, there is a possibility of using the under-display camera (UDC) so that the user can face a full-screen screen without a hole. It is said that the first foldable iPhone will be unveiled next year alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series.
