Intel has confirmed that Sachin Kathi, the company’s chief technology and artificial intelligence officer, has joined OpenAI. At OpenAI, Kathy will work on the development of the startup’s computing infrastructure.

One year as the head of Intel’s artificial intelligence department
“Artificial intelligence remains one of Intel’s highest strategic priorities, and we are focused on executing on our technology and product roadmap for emerging AI workloads,” Intel said in a statement.

Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, announced that Sachin Cathy is joining the startup to help them design and build their computing infrastructure. Earlier this year, Cathy was appointed director of AI operations at Intel. The chip maker has struggled in recent years to come up with products that can compete with Nvidia, the undisputed leader of the AI chip market.
OpenAI has also become one of the largest buyers of new generation computing hardware through a series of multi-billion dollar contracts and is also planning to develop its own chips. It is said that OpenAI will unveil its first proprietary artificial intelligence chip in 2026. The chip will be developed in collaboration with Broadcom and will help OpenAI reduce its dependence on Nvidia and AMD.
The CEO of Intel previously admitted that the company no longer has a place in the list of the top chip makers in the world and is left out of the artificial intelligence competition. Intel executives have admitted that the company cannot compete with giants like Nvidia in the field of artificial intelligence and should probably focus on areas such as computer processors.
