Nintendo’s new financial report has been published, and while attention is drawn to the performance of the company’s new console, the Switch 2, it is actually the previous generation console that is on the verge of achieving a historic achievement for Nintendo and will soon become the best-selling console in the company’s history.
Based on sales data through the end of September 30, 2025, the Nintendo Switch is only about 10,000 units away from surpassing the Nintendo DS’s lifetime sales record. DS is at the top with 154.02 million units sold, and Switch is right behind with 154.01 million units, which is a very small distance! With the Switch still selling in significant numbers, it looks like the popular hybrid console will soon break this record.

Nintendo’s forecast for the annual sales of the Switch is around 4 million units, and there are still two more fiscal quarters left until the end of the year. For comparison, the Nintendo Wii, another of the company’s most successful consoles, sold a total of 101.63 million units.
This comparison shows how big the success of the Switch has been. In contrast, Wii U sold only 14.56 million units, which was a significant failure for Nintendo. But in the overall sales competition of consoles, there is still another giant left, which is PlayStation 2. Sony’s best-selling console with more than 160 million units until last fall is still the absolute record holder. However, if the sales of the Switch continue at this rate, the possibility of it reaching the crown of the best-selling console in history is not too far off.
