The Donald Trump administration recently announced that it has identified five potential sites on the lands of the US Department of Energy that could develop data centers and power plants that support artificial intelligence growth.
Why is this important?
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has led to the first increase in electricity demand in the United States over the past two decades, forcing major technology companies and service companies to work to build data centers and new power plants.
The Ministry of Energy announced that these potential sites are suitable for quick construction of data centers, as the energy infrastructure in these areas allows for expediting licensing for new energy projects, including the construction of nuclear reactors.
However, it is unclear how nuclear energy, under the supervision of the Independent Nuclear Energy Commission, can be approved faster.
“The global competition for artificial intelligence is the next Manhattan project, and with the leadership of President Trump and the innovation of our national laboratories, the United States can and will be able to win.” The remarks were referred to by Energy Minister Chris Wright, referring to the US secret project to develop the first nuclear weapon during World War II.
The background
The Ministry of Energy is one of the largest land managers in the United States. These two sites include the Idaho National Laboratory and the Epitny in Padukah, Kentucky and Portsmouth, Ohio, both used to produce enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and commercial reactors.
Former President Joe Biden’s Ministry of Energy has identified sites in five states, including Washington, Nevada and South Carolina, which could host clean energy projects such as solar, wind and nuclear energy projects.
The Ministry of Energy needed cleansing after being infected as a result of the development of nuclear weapons and other Cold War activities.
Next steps
The Ministry of Energy has encouraged private-government partnerships and has requested comments from data developers, energy developers and the public. The purpose of this ministry is to prepare artificial intelligence infrastructure by the end of the year.
