In April 2024, Elon Musk, the owner of the social network X, hinted at an Unhinged mode for the AI-based chatbot Grok. Now xAI, another of Elon Musk’s companies and the developer of Grock’s artificial intelligence, has updated its FAQ page with more details about this new mode.
Insane mode is in line with Grok’s goals
According to the information on the FAQ page, in a frenzy, Grok offers answers that are considered offensive, inappropriate, and rude; Something like an amateur comedian who is just learning his craft.
Crazy Mode may be Musk’s attempt to realize Grok’s original AI vision. When Musk introduced Grok about 2 years ago, he presented the chatbot as a bold, unfiltered, anti-woke tool that is generally ready to answer controversial questions that other AI systems won’t. He has partially fulfilled this promise. For example, if Grok is asked to be rude, he will unapologetically use profanity and slang that has never been heard before on ChatGPT.
In its current state, Grock is conservative on political issues and does not cross clear boundaries. But a study showed that Gerak does not declare neutrality about some political and social issues. Musk blames this behavior on Grok’s training data, i.e. public web pages, and promises to push Grok’s data towards political neutrality.
He said in a post in December 2023:
“Unfortunately, the internet that Grok was trained on is full of wok bullshit. Gerak will get better. This is just the beta version.”
Musk and many of his allies, including David Sachs, who has been named the Trump administration’s crypto and AI chief, accuse AI chatbots of censoring conservative views. Sacks specifically named ChatGPT as the main suspect, claiming it was programmed to give false answers on politically sensitive topics.
