On the 23rd of November, the event “Information Sciences and Artificial Intelligence” was held in the National Library of Iran. In this event, “Homa Arshadhi”, a doctoral student in medical librarianship and information, was present in the specialized panel “Ethics and Artificial Intelligence” and discussed the challenges, benefits and concerns related to the use of artificial intelligence in scientific and research processes. In this article, a summary of Mrs. Arshadhi’s speech has been discussed.
The necessity of using artificial intelligence in research
Arshadhi considered the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research to be necessary and said: “Today, the use of artificial intelligence has become a requirement in many scientific fields, especially in various fields of medical sciences. Without these tools, the speed and accuracy of researches will decrease.”
He also added: “Despite the many advantages that artificial intelligence has, there are still challenges in using it correctly that should be addressed.”
Compilation of ethical guidelines
Arshadhi considered one of the main concerns in the use of artificial intelligence to be the lack of strict ethical standards and emphasized that the development of ethical guidelines in This field is essential. He said: “Although artificial intelligence has many capabilities, if ethical principles are not observed in its use, it can cause harm such as theft. Scientific and scientific mistakes lead. Therefore, the necessary training for the responsible use of this technology should be provided both at the individual level and at the level of scientific institutions.
Advantages of artificial intelligence in scientific research
Arshadhi mentioned three major advantages of artificial intelligence in research processes:
- Increasing the speed of research: “Artificial intelligence can reduce the time required to collect data and analyze them, and this will increase the speed of research.”
- Increasing accuracy in data analysis“Using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, it is possible to increase the accuracy of analyzes and reduce human errors.”
- Expand access to research resources: “Artificial intelligence can facilitate researchers’ access to scientific resources, especially for those in resource-constrained situations.”
Challenges of using artificial intelligence
Ms. Arshadhi pointed out some basic challenges that exist in the way of using artificial intelligence in research:
- The possibility of generating false information: “Given that artificial intelligence can generate data automatically, there is also a risk of generating false or erroneous information. Artificial intelligence tools should be used in such a way that this risk is minimized.”
- Moral and legal issues: “One of the serious problems in the use of artificial intelligence is the issue of intellectual and legal ownership. “Especially when research results are generated by artificial intelligence, there may be questions about their ownership.”
- Reducing attention to the human dimensions of research: “Artificial intelligence is still not able to fully understand the human and social dimensions of some researches. This issue can reduce the quality of social and humanitarian research.
Ethical principles in the use of artificial intelligence
Ms. Arshadhi stressed that for the correct use of artificial intelligence, certain ethical principles must be formulated. These principles include:
- Disclosure of use of artificial intelligence: “Researchers must clearly declare any use of artificial intelligence in order to prevent problems such as plagiarism and scientific misconduct.”
- Responsible use of artificial intelligence: “Artificial intelligence should not replace researchers and scientific judges. These tools should act as complements and not substitutes.”
- Review of reliable scientific sources“It is important for researchers to ensure that the data and sources they use are from reliable and scientific sources and should not rely on unreliable data.”
At the end of his speech, Arshadhi emphasized: “The use of artificial intelligence in scientific research, although it brings many benefits, but it must be used with care and responsibility.” According to him, it is necessary to develop ethical standards and necessary training for researchers in using this technology in order to use its capacities correctly and usefully.
