“Mohammedreza Maboudian”, the head of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Commission of the Computer Trade Union Organization of the country, analyzed the GITEX 2024 exhibition in Dubai in an interview with us. While pointing out the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in industry and global economy, he examined the role of Iran and startups in this event and presented interesting views about the future of artificial intelligence and Iran’s participation in such international events.
GITEX 2024; A world exhibition centered on artificial intelligence
Mohammad Reza Maboudian said about GITEX 2024: “This year’s slogan of this exhibition was global cooperation to shape the future economy, and as you can see, the discussion of economy and artificial intelligence was prominent in this event. It is clear to me that AI is no longer just a specific area of technology, but has seriously affected all aspects of IT, from software to hardware.”
He continued: “A few years ago, many of us thought that AI was just a tool, but now we see that this technology is rapidly taking over all sectors of the technology industry. From software development to hardware control, artificial intelligence has already permeated all areas and may even surpass hardware in the coming years.”
Mohammadreza Maboudian also pointed to the growth and development of artificial intelligence in Iran and added: “One of the interesting points I observed at GITEX this year was especially in industrial fields such as oil, gas and petrochemicals. In this exhibition, I saw companies using artificial intelligence to optimize energy consumption and improve industrial processes. In the field of drug production, we also saw the use of artificial intelligence to produce customized drugs that were specially prepared based on customer tests.
Iran’s competitiveness in GITEX; Strengths and weaknesses
Regarding the presence of Iran in GITEX 2024, Maboudian pointed out the weak presence of Iranian companies in this event and said: “Unfortunately, Iran did not have a strong presence in this event. On the one hand, some Iranian companies cannot use global capacities such as Google Cloud and other international services, because these services are blocked in the country. On the other hand, Iranian companies were not able to compete with other companies due to lack of competitive products and appropriate sales strategies.
He added: “Of course, this does not mean that there is no talent and potential in Iran. Some startups had good presentations in this exhibition, especially in the field of medicine and price prediction. But compared to other companies, their number was small and weak in terms of competition.
One of the interesting points that Maboudian raised was the effect of the presence of Iranian companies in international events: “More than 18,000 Iranians attended GITEX, but few of them were able to take advantage of this opportunity.” “Many Iranian visitors only visited the market and failed to take advantage of the opportunities for partnerships or receiving new ideas.”
Challenges and opportunities for Iran in the world of artificial intelligence
Maboudian assessed the holding of GITEX 2024 as very successful and added: “The holding of this exhibition in a specialized manner, including dedicating a special space to startups, investors, and special programs such as lectures and startup competitions, can be a model for Iranian organizers. In this event, they managed to create an attractive atmosphere for introducing startups by holding various events and shows.”
At the end of his interview, Mohammadreza Maboudian emphasized that despite the existing challenges, Iran should invest more in innovation and upgrading its technological infrastructure in order to be more successful in the global competition of artificial intelligence and new technologies.
Pointing to the importance of participating in events such as Jitex, he said: “Active presence in international exhibitions can be an opportunity to learn and update the strategies of Iranian startups and companies. Especially in the field of artificial intelligence, which is expanding rapidly, these types of events can play a key role in shaping the future of Iran’s economy and industry.”
