With the advent of new technologies, the next decade will be the decade of digital growth for sub-Saharan Africa. For the first time, more than half of the population of this region will have access to the Internet, and artificial intelligence alone will be able to contribute up to 30 billion dollars to the economy of the countries of this region.
But to realize these numbers, all the tech giants from around the world need to come together, as Google has recently taken steps towards the digital growth of this region. Google recently added 15 native African languages to its voice search and translation; Native language voice search allows people to interact with technology in the most common way.
According to Google, this update has led to an additional 300 million people in the region interacting with technology in their native language. Google owes its progress to the path taken by artificial intelligence; The progress of artificial intelligence in recent years has led to such achievements in the field of speech recognition and speech-to-text conversion.
AI models learn language the same way children are taught to learn; Speech recognition models are trained on data from multiple languages to convert speech to text in each language.
Google currently supports nearly 200 African languages in Gboard and 60 African languages in the translation section. The voice input of GBoard and “Vice Search” has also been significantly improved and has reached 25 African languages, and in the translation section, the number of African language entries has reached 13.
It is interesting that Google is committed to invest 5.8 million dollars for the flourishing of the digital economy in this region; The investment aims to support AI skills and education across sub-Saharan Africa. More precisely, this funding will be used to equip workers and students with basic skills in artificial intelligence and cyber security.
Google’s focus for the flourishing of the digital economy in the region is to ensure that all people in sub-Saharan Africa get the benefits of this flourishing.
