Free training of artificial intelligence models with artists’ works
Ed Newton-Rex, the British composer and former AI director who came up with the statement, told the Guardian that people who make a living producing creative works are “very concerned” about the situation. Newton-Rex, formerly head of audio at AI technology company Stability, says:
“There are 3 critical resources that AI companies need to build their models: people, computing, and data. They spend huge sums of money for the first 2 (sometimes up to $1 million per engineer and up to $1 billion per model) but expect to get the training data for free. “What we’re talking about is people’s creations, like their writing, art, and music.”
So far, several experts and organizations such as News Corp and the Recording Industry Association of America have sued AI companies to train AI models for unlicensed use of their copyrighted works.
Also, if you remember, one of the things that was protested during last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike was the use of artificial intelligence technology to scan actors’ faces to create a digital version of them.
