John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, pioneers in the development of neural networks and machine learning techniques, won the Nobel Prize.
The winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics have been announced
On October 8, 2024, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm announced that John Hopfield of Princeton University in New Jersey and Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto in Canada won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. The two researchers were awarded 11 million Swedish kroner (about one million US dollars) for their efforts in the development of artificial neural networks.
A revolution in machine learning
The members of the Nobel committee stated that the discoveries of these two researchers formed the fundamental parts of machine learning, adding that these techniques help humans make faster and more reliable decisions. Using their knowledge of physics, Hinton and Hopfield developed methods to develop artificial neural networks that can learn abstract concepts.
Development of neural networks
In 1982, Hopfield introduced a network that described the connections between nodes as physical forces. By storing the patterns as a low-energy state, the system could reconstruct the image when a similar pattern was received. Using the principles of statistical physics, Hinton created a more advanced version of the Hopfield network that was able to identify and classify images.
“The news was like a thunderbolt,” Hinton said in a phone call upon learning of the Nobel prize. I was really surprised and had no idea about this happening.” He added that advances in machine learning “will have a huge impact and will be comparable to the industrial revolution, but instead of excelling in physical power, it will excel in the mental abilities of humans.”
Appreciating the efforts of these two researchers, it is clear that machine learning and neural networks not only contribute to scientific progress, but in the near future, they may dramatically change the way we live and work. Considering the increasing importance of these techniques, it is expected that a revolution similar to what we witnessed during the industrial revolution will take place in the world of artificial intelligence.
