Large technology companies have recently increasingly decided to turn to nuclear power to meet the power needs of their data centers. “Jensen Huang”, the CEO of Nvidia, has recently announced that nuclear energy can be a good option to provide the energy needed by this company. The news follows Microsoft’s recent effort to reactivate the Three Mile Island nuclear facility to power its data centers in the area.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Huang said Nvidia could be interested in nuclear power as part of its broader strategy to diversify the energy sources that power data centers, according to Bloomberg.
Nuclear energy is one of the sustainable and extraordinary energy sources. Of course, this will not be the only resource used by large technology companies.
The reason for companies active in the field of artificial intelligence to turn to nuclear energy
The idea of powering data centers with nuclear energy has become a trend among big tech companies, as companies like Nvidia, Microsoft, and even Amazon and Google are doubling down on their data centers to support AI initiatives. Therefore, over time, they intend to provide the energy of this technology through less harmful energies such as nuclear energy. As a result, the emission of greenhouse gases will decrease worldwide and the environment will be less damaged.
Data center electricity consumption is expected to nearly double by 2026, reaching between 650 and 1,050 TWh, compared to 460 TWh in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Therefore, it will probably replace fossil fuels in the near future.
Referring to the data centers designed to support the heavy needs of artificial intelligence, the CEO of Nvidia talked about the various challenges of building these “artificial intelligence factories”. Building these factories requires significant energy, which is why they are often built far from population centers.
