Google CEO Sundar Pichai described artificial intelligence as the most transformative technology in history at the UN Future Summit on Saturday and announced the creation of a new fund for AI education and training around the world.
According to the Google news site, Pichai pointed to four broad opportunities for artificial intelligence and sustainable development: helping people access information in their own language, providing warnings and tracking climate disasters, accelerating scientific discoveries, and boosting economic progress.
Pichai acknowledged that artificial intelligence also has risks:
“As with any emerging technology, artificial intelligence will have limitations. Also, risks of misuse and abuse, such as deepfaking, threaten this technology. In addition, artificial intelligence raises new complications; For example, its impact on the future of work. Due to these reasons, we believe that artificial intelligence should be developed, implemented and used responsibly from the very beginning.
He continued:
“We are guided by our AI principles that we published in 2018. We also cooperate with organizations such as the Border Model Association, OECD, the Hiroshima G7 Organization, the United Nations, and other actors in the field of industry, universities, and governments.”

He added that he wants to prevent a global “artificial intelligence divide”; To this end, Google is creating a $120 million AI Global Opportunity Fund to enable AI training and practice around the world in partnership with local non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations.
Finally, Pichai calls for “smart product regulation to reduce harm and resist nationalistic tendencies” — otherwise, he predicts current regulations could widen the AI divide and limit the benefits of using the technology.
