About 60 countries, including the United States, supported the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the military industry at the Seoul Artificial Intelligence Summit. China was the only country that did not support this non-binding plan.
According to Reuters, the Conference on Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military (REAIM) is currently being held in Seoul, South Korea. This is the second conference in this field. Last year’s conference was held in The Hague, Netherlands. The purpose of holding such conferences is to determine the strategy and road map for the safe and responsible use of this technology in military industries.
Weapon manufacturers have started using artificial intelligence
Representatives participating in this conference announced that this year’s plan is action-oriented and more advanced issues such as the use of drones equipped with artificial intelligence in the battle of Ukraine were also discussed. Ukraine itself is one of the countries that has supported the document on the responsible use of artificial intelligence for military purposes.
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Berkelmans told Reuters:
“We are taking more concrete steps. “Last year’s summit was more about building common understanding, but this year we are moving more towards action.”
According to Berklemans, going into action includes actions such as determining the type of risk assessment, and important conditions such as human control and how to adopt trust-building measures to manage risk.
One of the details of this year’s document is the need to prevent terrorist groups from using artificial intelligence to promote weapons of mass destruction and the importance of human controls, especially in nuclear weapons.
Representatives of about 30 countries attended the Seoul conference. China was also among the countries that sent its representative to this conference, but did not support its document, which shows the vast difference in the views of the countries.
According to Korean officials, they plan to discuss a document on the responsible use of artificial intelligence for military purposes at the UN General Assembly in October.
